The Yellowknife House Ceilidhs are informal music and story gatherings that are hosted in different homes every month. Also known as kitchen parties or song circles, the Ceilidhs have a unique informal and inviting atmosphere ideal for the aspiring musician or storyteller. But they are also a wonderful place to just go and listen. In general, the Ceilidhs are held the last Saturday of every month, with the notable exception of the December Ceilidh, which is traditionally held on New Year's Eve. The Ceilidh starts at 8 p.m. and is open to everyone - you don't need an invitation. Participants sit around in a circle and take turns sharing a story, piece of music, dance, or a joke, or they may pass if they don't feel like doing anything. There are three simple rules for the Yellowknife House Ceilidhs: "Anything goes" - whatever the style of music, language, culture, religion. They are 'listening' events - the Ceilidhs are not places to hear 'background music' while you chat with friends. "Help yourself" - food and drinks are laid out buffet style. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Backgrounder | This Month's Ceilidh | Ceilidhs - past 21 years ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PAST 21 YEARS: photo gallery
