Recording Artists in the North:

A well known folk music group that has been singing songs about the North for years.  Based in Yellowknife, their members have changed, but the spirit of their songs has remained consistent.  They have recorded several albums.

   
Lyndon Duong (email) A bright young face in our music scene, Lyndon has recorded his first album of classical guitar music and he's barely into his teens.
   
Steve Smith (website) A singer/songwriter blending his East Coast roots with Northern stories, Steve has contributed vastly to the music scene in Yellowknife and has recently come out with an album.
   
Northern Skies A Northern Celtic/Jazz band that writes music encapsulating the spirit of the north.
   
Priscilla's Revenge A Rock/Jazz trio that composes original material with interesting stories and themes.  All skilled musicians, they are energetic and dynamic on stage.
   
Sandy Pringle A singer/songwriter whose vocal and lyric style varies from simple folk to jazz.

Aurora Festival: February, March, April

Yellowknife:  Celebrate "Life Under the Lights", like never before with this jam packed community festival. So many events to choose from such as feathered films, live Jam's, art shows, plays, dances and workshops, and much much more....Phone: (867) 669-0863

   
Caribou Carnival: March Yellowknife:  Enjoy the Canadian Championship Dog derby, the Queen and Princess contests, snowmobile races, Dene drumming and traditional Hand Games, Inuit sports competitions, live musical entertainment, various activities and an ice sculpting contest. Festival of Stories: May/June Yellowknife:  The first storytelling festival ever held in the NWT. Featuring local, territorial and national storytellers. See Northern Arts and Cultural Centre
   
End of the Road Music Festival: August A very popular festival in Inuvik, featuring music from a variety of genres.
   
Folk on the Rocks: July Yellowknife's Annual Folk festival featuring entertainers from across the NWT, southern Canada and the U.S., including Inuit and Dene singers, drummers and dancers and Inuit throat singers. Displays of arts and crafts, music and song writing, workshops and a children's stage. Phone: (867) 920-7806
   
Great Northern Arts and Music Festival: July Inuvik:  Internationally known, this festival features carvers, painters, textile artists, performers of all stripes, and more.
   
Northern Arts and Cultural Centre It may be small, only seating 312, but NACC is THE place to go for great drama, music, dance, and storytelling.
   
South Slave Friendship Festival: August Fort Smith:  An annual event famous throughout the NWT amongst performers as one of the most fun gigs to play at.

NWT Arts Council You may have noticed that many of the artists listed on this site with recordings received financial support from the NWT Arts Council.  We are lucky to have such a supportive funder.  Many up and coming recording artists, painters, storytellers, carvers, festival organizers, poets, writers and others have benefited tremendously from the funding provided by the Government of the NWT.
